(Riverton, Wyo.) – A Riverton home was severely damaged in a fire yesterday evening, but luckily no one was harmed. Riverton Fire Chief Mike Hutchison said the fire at a home on the 800 block of North 16th Street East broke out at about 6 p.m., having been found by someone in the neighborhood.

Hutchison said the person who discovered the fire, which originated on a back covered porch, was able to contact the lone occupant of the home at the time. The woman who was inside was apparently unaware of the fire.

The fire reportedly completely destroyed the home’s back deck and caused severe fire damage to the garage and kitchen areas, as well as heat and smoke damage throughout most of the home. Initial investigation indicates the likely cause was a barbecue grill, but the investigation is ongoing.

Three or four occupants have been displaced because of the fire, Hutchison said, and Riverton Police Department’s victim services aided with initial help in finding a place for them to stay.

Firefighters were on scene for more than two hours.
