Brock held under $250,000 bond, initial hearing set today in Riverton Circuit Court
(Riverton, Wyo.) – A 23 year-old Riverton man has been charged with two counts of kidnapping in connection with the abduction of a 9-year-old girl from her bedroom Saturday night. Bond has been set at $250,000 for David Brock, who was captured hiding in a storage unit in Lander on Tuesday afternoon. Brock is slated for an initial appearance in Riverton Circuit Court before Judge Wesley Roberts at 1:30 this afternoon.
According to an affidavit used to support the two kidnapping counts, Brock is alleged to have opened a window at the girl’s home on Cindy Circle around 3:40 a.m., gabbed her while she slept, pulled her out of the window, covered her mouth to prevent her from screaming, and then began walking away with her. The child, however, was able to get out at least one scream, which was heard by her parents who immediately began to search for her and called police.
In the affidavit, Detective Scott Gardner explained, in great detail, the route the victim said she was taken, the house where she was taken, the bedroom of the defendant, the back yard of the house, and a tree house where she was placed. Nothing was written in the affidavit to indicate what, if anything, occurred in the tree house, except that she was placed in a chair there, and the defendant is alleged to have taken off his boots.
After a short period of time, the man is said to have lowered her to the ground, walked her a short distance away and then asked her if she knew how to get home. She replied that she did, and he walked away. The girl was subsequently spotted walking down Mary Ann street by a Riverton Police Officer who gathered her up and took her home where the girl and her parents met with detectives.
According to the affidavit, based on the detailed description of the suspect and his home, officers were able to obtain a search warrant for a home in the 900 block of East Jackson, which was served Sunday night. Brock, however, was not at the home.
Police then contacted Brock’s mother, a Riverton resident, who told police that her son was hiding out in a storage unit behind Rodney’s Colllision and Custom Center Storage in the 300 block of Mortimore Lane in Lander.
Armed with another search warrant, officers opened the storage unit, and found Brock trying to hide himself under items in the unit. He was taken into custody.
