Riverton man’s alleged sexual relationship with a minor discovered following June crash
(Riverton, Wyo.) – A 28-year-old Riverton man’s alleged sexual relationship with a 16-year-old girl was discovered by law enforcement after he crashed a car on Bee Road in early June.
Brandon Carl Smiley has been charged with Sexual Abuse of a Minor in the Third Degree. If he is found guilty, he could serve up to 15 years in prison.
Smiley was reportedly driving a vehicle on the evening of June 5 when he lost control, veered through a fence and became stuck in a ditch. According to a Fremont County Sheriff’s Office report, Smiley fled the scene. He was located a day later and arrested for Child Endangering, Reckless Endangering, Driving While Under Suspension and Duty to Report Property Damage.
In the vehicle were reportedly an 8-year-old male, two 16-year-old girls, a 16-year-old boy and an 18-year-old man. According to the affidavit in the case, one of the 16-year-old girls told the responding deputy that she was Smiley’s girlfriend and was three months pregnant with his child.
During an interview with the girl, she reportedly told investigators that despite their age difference they were dating. Smiley was reportedly incarcerated from December 2013 until early March 2014. She told investigators that was when the physical side of the relationship began.
After additional questioning of Smiley, he reportedly agreed that it was possible that he was the father of the child, the affidavit states. “Smiley also admitted that he knew that (the victim) was 16 years old at the time,” the document adds.
An arraignment date has not yet been set, and bond information was not readily available.
