(Riverton, Wyo.) – The lawn at the Central Wyoming College Activity Field was full of camp chairs, coolers and lots of fire Saturday night. The annual Riverton Rendezvous Hot Air Balloon Rally’s night glow and candlestick saw two of this year’s participating balloons inflate for the show, with six others doing the candlestick before an appreciate audience.
Nearly every good vantage spot was then filled along Highway 26, Chantelle Boulevard, Valley View and Airport Road plus the big lawns at Central Wyoming College for the evening’s 30 minute-long fireworks show from Griffey Hill.
At 10 p.m., the big fireworks show started with an exploding aerial shell here and there, but it built to a crescendo and then ended with a flurry of shells exploding high in the air to the delight of horn-honking onlookers. There was one minor fire from the fireworks, a grass fire next to a residence not that far away from the launch site, but firefighters were on hand and had the blaze controlled and out in short order.
The balloon rally concludes Sunday morning at CWC with a 6 a.m. launch planned at Central Wyoming College’s north athletic field.
