Lander residents Metcalfe and Woodruff scaled Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania
(Mt. Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, Africa) – John Metcalfe and Michelle Woodruff of Lander have summited Africa’s tallest mountain, the 19,341 foot Mount Kilimanjaro in the Eastern Rift Mountains of Tanzania. The mountain, known as the “Roof of Africa” is the tallest free-standing mountain in the world as it is not attached to or a part of another mountain range. According to National Geographic, it now takes the average person between 6 to 9 days to reach the summit.
The mountain is also famous because it has three volcanic cones, Kibo, Maweni and Shira.
