Grass fires keeping firefighters busy late Friday afternoon; Sideswipe crash in Lander

(Lander, Wyo.) – A number of grass fires around the county this afternoon have kept firefighters hopping in Lander and near Fort Washakie.

Fremont County Fire Protection District Battalions in Fort Washakie, Hudson and Lander Rural all responded to grass fires Friday afternoon, but one grass fire just east of Lander  engulfed a pole barn and completely destroyed the structure and a camper trailer that was parked inside. That fire was just east of the propane farm just past the shooting range on the hill. Lander City units also responded to the structure fire.

In Lander, a fire of undetermined origin sparked a hillside blaze between South Ninth Street and Vance. The fire threatened several homes and damaged one fence. A fire investigator was called to the scene.

While the fire departments were busy, a sideswipe crash occurred on South 5th Street in Lander, damaging two parked SUVs. Lander Police are investigating that crash.

Coincidence – my daughter and I were in Lander on June 29/30, leaving grandson off for a month of camping in the mountains to the West. He's been seriously trained in fire and rescue in Eagle County down here.
