Riverton teen seriously injured in single vehicle rollover Monday

(Riverton, Wyo.) – Fremont County Undersheriff Ryan Lee said a 17-year-old Riverton girl was seriously injured at noon on Monday when she was ejected during a single vehicle rollover on Burma Hill.

The girl, whose name has not been released by authorities, was reportedly the driver and sole occupant of a 2001 Subaru Outback. Lee said the girl indicated “she was distracted by her cell phone and failed to negotiate a corner on the 300 block of Burma Road as she was traveling southbound. The driver lost control of the vehicle and overcorrected twice before the vehicle left the roadway and overturned two and one quarter times.”

Lee said the driver was not wearing a seatbelt, causing her to be ejected during the rollover. “Witnesses to the incident stayed with the young woman until emergency crews arrived,” Lee said. “She was transported to the Riverton Hospital with serious injuries. No other contributing factors to the collision have been determined.”

Being a former EMT, I fail to see why seatbelt usage is often overlooked, when there are deadly consequenses. That split second act of buckling up will change everything in an accident no matter what the cause! I hope she makes a full recovery and considers it a lesson learned, as should others.

I used to be young and foolish about seatbelts. About 13 years ago, traveling to Laramie, something told me to buckle mine. Roughly a half-hour later, I was involved in a serious crash that I would probably not have survived, had I not been wearing my seatbelt. Now, I buckle-up everytime. Don't wait for a life lesson like that. Please, buckle-up!

Ed and Lesa….I cannot imagine your nightmare and pain as we all pray for Harlee to make a full recovery. Please don't let the comments get to you. I don't think anyone is judging- just making the observation that we ALL need to leave the cell phone in the back seat and buckle up…We were all invincible kids once and the bad stuff always happens to someone else- unfortunately, this time your beautiful daughter was the "someone else"….Praying for a full recovery and peace to you and Lesa…We love y'all and look forward to celebrating Harlee's full recovery with something special, just for her, here at the Roost…

My seat belt saved my life and I preach that to EVERYONE. I also am a good driver (if you ask me or my dad) but unfortunately it only takes a moment for shit to happen. My prayers are with her and you through this difficult time. I hope this serves as a lesson to everyone. Not just teenagers are guilty of this. I pass plenty of adults fucking around on their phones while driving as well. Heal quickly Harlee. We are all pulling for you.

This young lady is a BRIGHT, CARING, HAS A GREAT PERSONALITY, HAS SOME OF THE BEST FAMILY AND PARENTS THAT I KNOW, AND LOVED by many! I am one of the lucky ones that knows her and family! Yes she made a MISTAKE! Which we all make mistakes! I see adults all the time with no seat belts and talking or texting on a phone! Some people should really think before they say.

such a sweet gal, full of energy, always makes us laugh and smile at the office… Our prayers go out to her and the family at this time.

The key words in this article are, "she was distracted by her cell phone." I hope she recovers and learned something. I believe there should be a disabler in all vehicles to stop the cell usage while driving. You literally take your life in your hands on west Main because of the cell phones.

All I have to say is I sincerely hope she comes out of this ok. Everyone judges but no one is above mistakes. They call them accidents for a reason.
