(Lander Wyo.) – Seven Wyoming residents, six from Lander and one from Laramie, returned from Honduras this spring after participating in a two week-long medical and dental mercy operation. Those who served on Mission of Mercy this year were:
- Dale and Jennifer Peterson. Dale is a retired dentist and both Dale and Jennifer are members of the Lander Rotary club.
- Hart Jacobsen a retired Lander doctor and member of the Lander Rotary Club
- Phil Gilbertson a retired Lander doctor.
- Eric Sheridan a Lander dentist.
- Mark Peterson a retired Lander surgical nurse.
- Lars Peterson an internal medicine doctor from Laramie.
Mission of Mercy serves many of the indigenous people of Honduras. The locations served by the team are only accessible by boat and the villages have no electricity. The medical team gives indigenous people help by treating a wide variety of illnesses. Medications given included those for parasites and asthma, vitamins, relieving pain and infections. Eye glasses supplied by the local Lions club were distributed to those who needed them. Dentists working with the team extracted unhealthy teeth, gave fluoride treatments and passed out toothbrushes. This year the medical team treated 1,200 patients and the dental team extracted 500 teeth in their clinics in three villages of the La Miskitia region of Gracias a Dios in Honduras. These medical and dental treatments help build international friendships and demonstrate the United States caring and compassion.
This Mission was started 35 years ago by Lander Rotarians Jennifer and Dale Peterson; three members of the Lander Rotary Club participate regularly. All participants pay their own fees and transportation costs which is about $2,500 per person. This year a two year grant in the amount of $5,000 given by the Lander Rotary Club and the Rocky Mountain District 5440 of Rotary International has helped the Mission purchase needed equipment including portable dental chairs, medications, water filters and, for the teams, camping equipment. The portable dental chairs are manufactured by a Rotary Club in Oregon.
