(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – Wyoming’s Mason Finley continued to collect honors Wednesday, as he was named the Mountain West’s Male Outdoor Track & Field Student-Athlete of the Year by member institution head coaches. The senior thrower is the first Wyoming male or female athlete ever to win the award for the indoor or outdoor season.
Finley concluded his career in brown and gold with an exceptional outdoor season this spring. He earned his 11th All-America accolade by finishing sixth in the discus at last weekend’s NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore. He was just the second Wyoming athlete to advance to the meet under the current qualifying system. Previously, he helped the Cowboys to their second-most points ever at the MW Championships with victories in the shot put and discus. His throw of 60-11 1/4 in the shot put set a Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex record and ranked fifth in school history. He also set a facility record and school record in the discus a week earlier at the Cowpoke Open with a toss of 210-6, which ranks third in MW history. During the outdoor season, he was named MW Athlete of the Week four times.
Finley will now compete in the discus at the U.S. Track & Field Outdoor National Championships on Friday, June 27, in Sacramento, Calif.
