Northern Arapaho Business Council urges civility toward anti-Indian group

(Wind River Reservation, Wyo.) — Northern Arapaho leaders today urged tribal members to show restraint while the anti-Indian group Citizens Equal Rights Alliance (CERA) rallies in Riverton this weekend, a news release from the tribe stated.

CERA advocates wholesale destruction of all Native American treaty rights. A Montana Advisory Committee to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights listed the group, along with the Ku Klux Klan, in a publication on white supremacist activity in Montana, the release said.

Despite these anti-Indian credentials, members of the Fremont County and Riverton governments will welcome CERA to Riverton City Hall for a meeting on Friday, and a conference at the Fremont County Fairgrounds on Saturday and Sunday, according to a CERA notice.

“We know this kind of bigotry feels deeply hurtful to Native Americans, but we ask our members to rise above and be civil to the CERA members and supporters,” said Northern Arapaho Business Council Co-Chairman Ronald K. Oldman.

Tribal members can most effectively combat CERA’s toxic message by treating CERA members with respect, tribal leaders said. Civility is especially important for those choosing to protest the events.

“A lot of people are starting from zero in terms of understanding our history and federal Indian policy,” Business Council Chairman Darrell O’Neal Sr., said. “Over the long run, we are going to have to work with local people and government officials, and they are going to need some second chances.”

Meanwhile, the NABC is actively coordinating with the Department of Justice, which is monitoring the CERA events.

There were no protesters at the first CERA event this morning in Riverton, and several Tribal members were noted in the audience taking notes at the session.

hmmm gives us non natives a few Gs and we'll be on our way lol or should I say give ME A few hundred Gs at best

  2. Karla Portlock Borders

WHY would the city of Riverton accomodate such a group?

  3. Melody Bearsbackbone

@Karla. Because the current leaders of Riverton are bigots and racist. Past leaders would not have allowed this.

  4. Brenda Montoya

Very Few people who are bigots and Racists don't even know their own history or ancestry, otherwise they would not behave in such a manner. Not knowing ones background leaves those who do not envious of those who have a rich and colorful heritage. That being said, this country was founded on racism towards minority groups however, they would do well to remember they were once the immigrants; The Original landlords of the Americas were the Amerindian peoples.

Why on earth would we want a hate group in our county. Terribly disappointing and wrong

I had an enrolled Arapahoe member state what is the difference? Non-Indians are not allowed at tribal council meetings. If you are married to a Native American and not native the only time you are allowed health care is when you are pregnant. Does any other insurance policy allow that discrimination? I know this is going to open a can of worms but I personally am tired of seeing jobs posted stating Native American preference. Is that not racist? Yet in all reality I do believe Riverton and surrounding areas belong to the reservation. I always wondered how you could receive a deed to land that was a 99 year lease such as Pavillion which was leased to the Bureau of Reclamation. I believe the government has ripped the reservation off just as they do everyone else. You also have to realize the city government of Riverton is the majority of a certain religious sect that resemble organized crime and if they are allowed to keep gaining power in controlling positions Riverton will be a mini SLC.

Some people need to get a clue, get a grip and get a life…especially the County10 staff whose journalistic credibility is seriously in question now. Having attended the presentation at City Hall, I found that CERA has basically the same intent as the tribes and most other municipalities and state governments. They want the fedearl government out of the lives the people…they want to stop government over reaching. How is that akin to being like the Klan? I suppose most people who got the idea that this was a Klan meeting got the info from the rather misinformed County 10 site. The presentation was very well presented and objective. The presentors were courteous and receptive to courtesy and the whole thing when along well until a Navajo woman got up to speak and she started spewing hate and accusations. I was one of the tribal members in the audience and yes I was taking notes, but I do that wherever I got…just to reflect on what was done at the meetings. It wasn't anything subversive. OMG people…get a clue, get a grip, get a life…stop drinking the kool aid!

Let me guess…you got your misinformation from journalistically challenged County 10 website?

  9. Karla Portlock Borders

Releasda, dear, I only asked a simple question….. Don't make assumptions about me.

  10. Carolyn Silvers

This is a very stupid move…but, there's seems to be more acceptance for hate lately.

Getting your misinformation from County 10 are you? How's that Obamacare working out for you!
