(Riverton, Wyo.) – A routine check of pawn shop receipts for stolen merchandise scored a hit on Wednesday. Police Captain Eric Murphy said it is routine for Pawn Shops to have items that are pawned checked to see if they were reported stolen anywhere. A .38 special Colt revolver that had been pawned in Riverton turned up on the hot list. The gun had been reported stolen from Mobile, Alabama in 1988.

“We’ll contact the seller to see how they came into possession of the gun, and many times we find it came from a deceased relative’s garage or attic, or from a friend of a friend or such,” Murphy said. “After we do our investigation we’ll pack the gun up and return via a delivery service to the department in Mobile where the stolen item was reported.”
