And the Number One way to help make Lander a better place for everyone:

Donate to this year’s Challenge for Charities!

The Challenge for Charities is a community-wide fundraiser, sponsored by the Lander Community Foundation, which raises and donates funds to 35 local nonprofit groups. Since 2011, the Challenge for Charities has raised more than $600,000 for Lander’s charitable organizations.

Here’s how it works. First, participating nonprofits raise funds from their supporters through mailings, using a brochure provided by the Foundation. If you’ve received a letter from one of your favorite local charities asking for your support through the Challenge for Charities, there’s still time to make a contribution: the donation period ends on July 11.

Each nonprofit gets to keep all the money it raises, and then the Foundation matches up to the first $10,000 of contributions made to each group. These matching funds are solicited from donors called Community Challengers, who give from $500 to $10,000 to the campaign. The Foundation distributes funds to participating nonprofits at a festive community celebration at the Museum of the American West in August.

The highlight of the campaign is the July 4 Half-Marathon, 5K Race and Kids’ One-Mile Mad Dash. More than 600 walkers and runners, kids and adults will come together to have a great time with their friends and neighbors and raise Challenge for Charities funds through their race entry fees. Register online at www.landercommunityfoundation.org or via registration forms located at Wild Iris Mountain Sports or the Chamber of Commerce.

Last year, 34 participating nonprofits raised nearly $200,000 in designated donations from more than 1,000 individuals. In addition, the Foundation raised more than $90,000 from Community Challengers for the matching fund pool, making it possible to give a 54% match to each nonprofit. This year, the Foundation is hoping to invest even more in Lander, working to enlist greater participation by generous Community Challengers and helping nonprofit groups raise vital funds to support their important work in our community.
