Lander dancer accepted into prestigious Russian intensive program
(Lander, Wyo.) – A 16-year-old Lander dancer has landed herself a spot in a prestigious summer intensive program in Washington, D.C. Jenna Kaufman said she auditioned for the Kirov Summer Intensive in Denver this spring and will be attending the six-day-a-week, six week program starting on June 22.
“Alumni from our year-round program dance in the world’s best companies, most notably American Ballet Theatre, San Francisco Ballet, Houston Ballet, The Washington Ballet, The Royal Ballet of London, Stuttgart Ballet and Vienna State Opera Ballet,” states the academy’s website.
Kaufman said that’s where she’d like to end up as well; her long-term goal is to dance in a ballet company with an education background. The program will focus on a Russian ballet technique, but also includes courses in other dance styles and lectures on Russian ballet history and other topics.
The Kirov website states there is only space for about 160 dancers for each three-week session; Kaufman will be attending both. Reportedly thousands audition for the intensive every year.
“I was really really happy for her,” Kaufman’s instructor, Susan Cooper said. She described Kirov as “really prestigious.” “I don’t teach that style, so it’ll be good for her.” Cooper said attending the summer intensive will help Kaufman become a more well-rounded dancer.
Kaufman said she’s nervous about attending despite the fact that she attended a summer intensive in Denver last year. “My mom can’t visit as much as she wants,” she said. Luckily, she has an uncle in the D.C. area who she can visit on Sundays.
