(Riverton, Wyo.) – The National Weather Service in Riverton Tuesday confirmed that the waterspout captured in a photograph on Saturday in the Wind River Range was the highest elevation water spout ever reported. According to the NWS, the International Center for Waterspout Research confirmed the new record. The previous high altitude waterspout was credited to Lake Geneva in the Swiss Alps at an elevation of 1,225.7 feet.

The waterspout photographed by Kathy Raper at Dollar Lake was at an elevation of 7,782 feet! The photo was taken from the Green River Lakes Road north of Pinedale. Dollar Lake is adjacent to the Teton and Fremont County lines in Sublette County.
