(Fort Washakie, Wyo.) – By all accounts, Saturday’s Moccasin Lake Challenge was a tremendous success. Organized by Michael Chingman, the event drew 128 runners and some 80 volunteers, including 30 runners from out-of-state. The 18 mile challenge race started with a check-in at Rocky Mountain Hall, and then to the starting point along Trout Creek Road where the road climbs the Wind River Range to Moccasin Lake.
Before the race, Shoyo’s memory was honored and members of his family received commemorative Pendleton coats. An Honor Song was sung and then the race began.
The yellow T-shirt clad runners stretched out along the route and had to brave paths through large snowbanks not yet melted en route to the lake, which is still covered in ice.
