Lander man, Donald Abernathy, dies in Sunday afternoon wreck on icy roads

(Lander, Wyo.) – An 83-year-old Lander died Sunday afternoon in single vehicle wreck, the Wyoming Highway Patrol and Fremont County Coroner’s Office reports

Donald Abernathy was pronounced dead at the scene of the wreck on Highway 789 near mile post 68 southeast of Lander at about 4:35 p.m., Chief Deputy Coroner Mark Stratmoen said. WHP Lt. Tom Adams said the only passenger, Garrick Martin, 34, was transported to SageWest Health Care in Lander. His condition is unknown at this time.

Adams said Abernathy was driving northbound on Highway 789 when he lost control of his 1991 GMC pickup on an icy bridge deck. The pickup reportedly crossed the bridge before leaving the roadway and rolling one and a half times, coming to rest on its side. Adams said both Abernathy and Martin were ejected from the vehicle. Neither were wearing seat belts, he said.

Adams said road conditions and speed to fast for conditions are considered contributing to this wreck.
