(Riverton, Wyo.) – The new location for the Riverton Farmer’s Market this year will remain just off Main Street, but in a city-owned vacant lot at 422 East Main. For the past two years, the market has been located on North Broadway between East Main and East Fremont. After considerable back and forth at Tuesday night’s city council meeting, a motion made but tabled at the last meeting was brought back on the floor and amended to the new location. The motion originally had the Farmer’s Market on the NorthWest corner of City Park. Sponsors of the market, however thought a location behind Riverton City Hall along the Rails To Trails Pathway would work

That location, however, was opposed by some people who thought a carefree and commercial event like the Farmer’s Market was not appropriate next to the Riverton Veteran’s Memorial, which is also located behind City Hall along the Rails to Trails. There was also concern of congestion and traffic flow behind city hall as the market can attract up to 300 customers during the peak season.

Market spokeswoman Sherry Shelley said when the objection over the Veteran’s Park became known, the group looked at other options again and settled on the 422 Main lot as a good location for this summer. The lot is now being used as a parking lot for adjacent businesses and is a remediation site for ground contamination due to the site’s former use as a gasoline station and as a dry cleaners.

The City Park location was rejected because of the coming reconstruction of North Federal, which would make access to the market very difficult.

After more discussion, councilor Jonathan Faubion asked Shelley what site her group wanted to go with this summer. “My group said 422 East Main,” she said. The motion on the floor was amended to that location and it passed 6-1 with only Martin Canaan voting no.
