What is the Lander Community Foundation?
(Lander, Wyo) – The Lander Community Foundation is a local philanthropic foundation whose mission is to create a stronger community by promoting philanthropy, encouraging and supporting effective giving, and providing leadership on issues that are important to our community. We support charitable organizations and offer donors easy and effective ways to give and build resources to meet future charitable needs in our community.
We strive to be a catalyst within our community. Our goal is to help strengthen nonprofit groups, by helping them to build capacity and by providing technical assistance. Our programs include presentations on topics such as event planning, volunteer recruitment, board development, and business partnerships.
In order to achieve the Lander Community Foundation’s mission of promoting philanthropy and creating a stronger Lander community, the foundation sponsors the annual Challenge for Charities, a community-wide fundraiser, that culminates in the Lander Half Marathon and 5K. Since 2011, the Challenge for Charities has raised over $600,000 for local nonprofits.
Our 2013 Challenge for Charities was very successful, the event raised over $282,000 for 34 local nonprofits. The Lander Community Foundation raised $90,475.68 from 45 community Challengers for the matching fund pool. This translated into a 54% match for funds raised by each nonprofit (up to $10,000).
Each year, the nonprofits have raised more funds through the Challenge for Charities, a community wide fundraiser sponsored by the Lander Community Foundation. In 2011, the nonprofits raised just under $93,750. In 2012, 24 nonprofits raised $120,200. In 2013, 34 nonprofits raised $195,000. In 2011, there were 3 nonprofits that met the $10,000 cap. In 2013, there were 8 out of the 34 nonprofits that met the $10,000 cap. The number of donations has increased every year as well. In 2011 there were 665 donations, 2012 we had 908 donations, and in 2013 we had 1,069 donations.
The real power of this event is the incentive provided by the match. Each year the Community Challenger Fund Pool has increased and been able to keep the match at a high level. In 2011, 24 Community Challengers donated $39,000. In 2012, 40 Community Challengers donated $65,000. In 2013, 45 Community Challengers donated $91,000.
The Lander community is pulling together a little more each year to support our local nonprofits that in turn support our community.
