(Riverton, Wyo.) – The Riverton High School Golf Team, the defending Class 4A State Champions, has been invited to the Antiqua National High School School Golf tournament in Scottsdale, Arizona, in September.
“They wanted to take teams that have had pretty good success, and as defending state champions, and because of our youth, we received an invitation,” said Coach Lars Flanagan. “They said because we were so young that was unique, they could see us for a number of years.”
Superintendent Terry Snyder, himself a former coach, said the RHS Golf Team “is a great example of excellence. To challenge them to the next level is important. It’s great to win a championship, but to win a second one is even tougher,” he said. “This will allow the team to continue to focus and work and learn from (other) individuals when you go to tournaments because of the quality of competition.”
Flanagan said all four of the athletes he brought to the meeting, “want to pursue athletics after high school. This would be a good experience for them.”
Trustees Mark Stone said the travel would “given them a chance to be seen by someone.” Jody Ray mentioned that the experience would “foster the growth in each of you. Not just as a golfer, but as an individual and as a student. Meeting with other students makes them better.”
The vote to approve the out-of-state travel request was unanimous.
