(Riverton, Wyo.) – Fremont County Sheriff Skip Hornecker announced that a Citizen’s Animal Control Committee has been formed to address dog impound issues across the county.
The committee is made up of the following individuals: Chairman Sharma Sonntag, Roger Millward, Leanne Linnell, Jan Hubenka, Ron Shaw, Montana Sannes and Becki Weber.
The group has had its initial meeting, where the sheriff’s office filled the group in on the current state of things. Late last year, the sheriff’s office lost its impound facilities in both Lander and Riverton for various reasons. Lander Police is also without a place to impound stray dogs.
One issue Hornecker said the committee will address specifically is how to fund an impound possibly outside of the government. The committee is also polling various counties to see how others are handling their stray dog problems. Hornecker said a man from Laramie County has offered to come talk with the committee about how his county handled similar problems.
When asked by the Fremont County Commission whether or not the committee might have recommendations before budget season, Hornecker said he doubted it.
