(Gillette, Wyo.) – A 31-year-old Gillette man, Travis Nelson, died Monday morning at Campbell County Memorial Hospital following a serious wreck on Wyoming Highway 59 about 1 mile north of Gillette.

According to a Wyoming Highway Patrol Report, roadways were icy and snow packed in spots at 6:30 a.m. on Jan. 27 when the wreck occurred.

Nelson was the front passenger in a Ford F250 pickup driven by Jared Wass, 22, of Gillette. That vehicle collided with a Kenworth truck and tractor combination driven by John Speelmon, 54, of Gillette.

“Speelmon was northbound on WYO 59 and Wass was southbound,” the WHP report states. “Wass lost control of his vehicle and it went into a broadside slide crossing the center line going into the opposite lane of travel into the path of Speelmon’s tractor trailer. Speelmon’s truck tractor struck Wass’s vehicle broadside on the passenger side front fender area. Upon impact, Nelson, who was the only one in Wass’s vehicle not wearing his seat belt, was totally ejected from the cab of the pickup. After impact Wass’s vehicle came to rest in the southbound lane of travel and Speelmon’s combination came to rest in the northbound lane of travel.”

Speelmon had two passengers in his truck. One was treated and released from the hospital. Speelmon and the other passenger were uninjured.

“WYO 59 was closed temporarily for approximately 2 hours,” the report states. “Wass has been cited for speed too fast for existing conditions.”
