(Riverton, Wyo.) – The Riverton Police Department and the Fremont County Coroner’s office are investigating the shooting death of an 18-year-old Riverton High School senior, whose body was found yesterday afternoon along the Riverwalk adjacent to the Big Wind River. Coroner Ed McAuslan said the youth’s body will be taken to Loveland, Colo. Wednesday for autopsy. Riverton Police Captain Eric Murphy said the identity of the caucasian youth is not being released at this time, pending results of the investigation.

Riverton High School Principal John Griffith said the school’s crisis team met last night and again today to plan for the day.

“We have our own counselors and counselors from other schools throughout the district. We have mobilized the counselor’s at Laramie High School as well for our students at All State Music at LHS. We have our Media Center set up for students who are struggling with the news and need a place to gather to talk with counselors and each other. That will remain at least through the end of the day.” Griffith said in an email to County10.com. “We have staff who are designated to walk the halls, check bathrooms, escort students to the Media Center etc… to make sure our students are safe. These are tough days but it is going about as good as you can expect. We are fortunate to have a great staff in our district that cares about kids inside and outside of their buildings and we work together.”
