Head-on collision on South Pass kills Cody man; WHP releases additional information

(Lander, Wyo.) – Fremont County Coroner Ed McAuslan said a 75-year-old man from Cody died in yesterday’s head-on collision on Highway 28.

Wyoming Highway Patrol Lt. Tom Adams said the Gerald Haugen died driving his 2013 Chrysler Town and Country van. His wife, Georgianna Haugen was extricated from the vehicle and life-flighted from the scene to Casper. The driver and lone occupant of the other vehicle, a 2000 Ford F350, was David Hoyt, 52, of Apache Junction, Ariz. All three were wearing seat belts.

McAuslan said Haugen died at the scene from injuries caused by the wreck.

The wreck  occurred near the Sweetwater River Rest Area on Highway 28 at roughly 5 p.m. on Friday. The highway was closed for some time, and the scene was not completely cleared until about 10 p.m.

Adams said the investigation into the cause of the wreck is continuing. At this time, Adams said Hoyt was driving westbound when he started to go off the right-side of the road, over-corrected and veered into the eastbound lane, striking the Haugens’ oncoming vehicle head-on. What caused Hoyt to go off the road in the first place is still under investigation.

Adams said Hoyt was treated and released at Lander Regional Hospital. Hoyt was cited for Driving Under Suspension, Failing to Maintain Lane of Travel and No Proof of Insurance.
