(Fremont County, Wyo.) – This year’s Shop with a Cop program coming up on Saturday is a record setter with more than double the number of kids being served over last year.

“We’ve gotten $10,450 in donations and right now we have 101 kids that we’ll be shopping with,” said Riverton Police Captain Eric Murphy Thursday morning. Murphy coordinates the program each year. “This is the biggest one we’ve ever done.”

Kids for the program are selected by local social service agencies.

Helping with the fund raising this year was the Riverton Elks Lodge 1693 that presented a check to Murphy this morning totaling $2,000. But others have contributed too. The Riverton Police Foundation contributed $1,500 that was matched by individual contributions, and donations have come in from area businesses. Those businesses will be recognized at a later date.

Contributions have come in from all across Fremont County, including from the Lander Police Department and the Fremont County Sheriff’s Department. Youngsters from across the county will participate Saturday as well. Each shopper will be matched with a law enforcement officer and have $100 to spend on gifts for their families, friends or themselves.

Last year there were 48 kids.

In addition to their monetary contribution, the Elks will be giving each participant a backpack bag containing a water bottle and some school supplies. Walmart is participating and will be distributing snacks at the event to be held at its store in Riverton.
