Here’s a good photo of the long and wide load taken as the unit crawled down Highway 28 on the top of Red Canyon. The photo was taken from a vantage point across the canyon as the highway makes a sharp “L” curve, allowing following vehicle to see the unit. (Lorrie Pozarik photo)
(Lander, Wyo.) – Travelers Saturday had quite a delay on Highway 28 between Lander and Farson when a very large wide load made its way across South Pass. The extra wide and heavy load took up nearly the entire width of the highway and was traveling at a very low rate of speed, estimated at only 5 mph, creating a very long backup behind the rig. Eyewitnesses said each trailer had over a dozen axles and that there were at least four tires on each axle to distribute the weight evenly across the roadway surface. Oncoming traffic had to drive on a portion of the barrow ditch to get around the load. The huge transport unit did pull over when possible to let traffic pass.
