(Riverton, Wyo.) – It’s been six weeks since since the Trailhead Restaurant in Riverton closed its smoking section and went totally smoke free. “A few customers cussed me out, some came back and others didn’t,” said owner Rowena Bland. “The reaction has been mostly positive, however, especially from non smokers.”
The former smoking session is now known as the restaurant’s Atrium Room.
“The air is so much cleaner in here now and people can smell the food, not smoke, when they come through the door,” she said.
Bland said maintaining a smoking session was becoming too expensive with the cost of replacement filters at $400 when her two smoke eaters were changed out. “Our costs were approaching $1,200 and they are dirty and smelly and we just had trouble with them. It made sense to pull them out.”
Most diners reacted with positive surprise when they entered the restaurant and asked for non smoking, Bland said. “When the patrons were told that we’re totally non smoking now, there were big smiles.”
The Trailhead joins a growing list of county restaurants that are smoke free. The Oxbow Restaurant in Lander went smoke free on December 1st and at the Sundowner Station in Riverton, the Ore Bucket Lounge is smoke free as well. The adjoining restaurant had earlier gone smoke free.
“All three businesses have now been added to the State of Wyoming and Fremont County’s Smokefree Restaurant and Lounge guides,” said Theresa Harmati, a community prevention professional from the Prevention Management Organization.
