Riverton Council to discuss remediation at former landfill in work session tonight
(Riverton, Wyo.) – The Riverton City Council will meet in a work session tonight (Tuesday) with only one item on the agenda. The council will discuss the old Riverton landfill and a remediation program that was authorized in the last legislative session. The meeting starts in the city hall council chambers at 7 p.m. The meeting will also be telecast on Riverton Cable Channel 11.
Acting Public Services Director Dawn Wilhelm, in a memo to the council, said the old Riverton landfill off of Smith Road was closed in the early 1980s. Since that time, she said groundwater has been monitored at the site which indicates there is some contamination from the landfill occurring.
The last legislature passed an act that created a municipal solid waste landfill remediation program and the old Riverton landfill is among the top sites in the state eligible for this program.
Representataives from Inberg-Miller Engineers will attend the work session to discuss the legislation, the background of the old Riverton Landfil, the current status of the landfill and how the legislation will impact the landfill.
