Redshirt freshman Stroh places fifth in prestigious event

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (Dec. 7, 2013) Two Cowboys placed in the top six of their respective weight classes as the University of Wyoming wrestling team wrapped up action in the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational on Saturday. The Pokes finished with 46 points, good for 14th place out of 33 teams.

Redshirt freshman Benjamin Stroh was the highest UW finisher, placing fifth at 184 pounds in his CKLV Invite debut. Stroh, ranked 18th in the nation, won four matches over two days. Stroh won three matches Friday to head to Saturday’s championship semifinals, only to lose two of his next three bouts.

Junior Tyler Cox, ranked sixth, wrestled his way into the 125-pound championship semifinals Saturday, but suffered his first loss of the season to fifth-ranked Jarrod Patterson (Oklahoma), followed by losses to the 20th- and seventh-ranked wrestlers in the nation to finish sixth.

Juniors Brandon Richardson (149), Dakota Friesth (165) and Shane Woods (197) wrestled into the second day, but each lost their first match Saturday to end their tournament run.

“This is a real high-level, premier event and is somewhat similar to NCAA tournament,” Wyoming coach Mark Branch said. “Every match is extremely tough and challenging. We just didn’t make anything special happen. I felt like we wrestled hard physically but there was not enough belief that we could win. They aren’t showing the mental toughness they need to right now. We have to believe in our training and program. It’s a challenging time for our team, but a lot of that is having a young team with a tough schedule.”

The Cowboys get back to dual action next weekend as they host No. 4 Oklahoma State at 7 p.m. in the Arena-Auditorium.
