(Lander, Wyo.) – Question: how many Emergency Responders does it take to get a kid out of a tree?
Answer: as many as show up.
As mentioned before, cops get called for just about everything. As summer wound down and schools opened, we have been getting busier and busier as Lander’s youth were getting in some last licks, and this involved one of them (although this was not a criminal act…just a kid act).
Recently the Lander Police Department and the Lander Volunteer Fire Department were sent to a residence in response to a kid stuck up in a tree, and that was actually a first for me. As I have related to you in the past, we (LPD) get called fairly often about animals in trees (cats, raccoons…just fill in the blank with the animal of your choice) and we routinely do nothing because as I might have mentioned before, I have never found a (fill in the blank again) skeleton in a tree.
This was a little different though, as there was a kid up a tree, about 16 feet up actually, and he had apparently climbed a little too far to retrieve a kitten and wasn’t entirely convinced he could get down. So, LPD and LVFD arrived and got a ladder up to him and he was helped down by one of the fire guys, without injury or undue embarrassment. By the way, both the kittens he attempted to rescue climbed down before he did and were watching all this from the ground with what I am convinced was a cat smirk.
The most interesting part of the whole incident was the response scenario…just picture it now…two cop cars, an animal control truck, at least two fire department vehicles, six fireman, two cops, and, oh yeah dog boy ( gotta have dog boy there!!!).
With that crew we could have rescued half the county!
