Sheridan is host to the 2013 State Cross Country Championships on Saturday.
Last year’s Gatorade XC Runner of the year is back to defend his two state titles. Rock Spring Senior Ricky Faure has won the 4A Boys race the last two years and is one of the favorites to win his third. Ricky placed 12th as a Freshman before winning it the last two years. His main competition will come from the Henry brothers of Laramie, Jonah, the East conference champion, and Chris, the runner up. Hunter Davila of Kelly Walsh should factor into the mix as well.
The 4A girls have a pair of Lady Camels favored. Tabitha Simmons and teammate Quinn DeStafano look to be favored but don’t count out West Champion Ashley Sondag of Natrona. Gillette’s Abby Phillips was last year’s 4A champion and is back to try to defend. She finished 7th at conference last week. Simmons finished 6th last year while Sondag was 14th.
In 3A, three time champion Hailey Ricks has graduated, so there will be a new champion. The West posted much faster times in conference, but, the course and weather play into the equation. Worland’s Sadie Wassum, the East Conference winner, finished third last year at state in Douglas. Jackson Freshman Anna Gibson blistered the field in the 3A West race last week and Cody’s Anne Brinegar has run steady all year and finished second. Newcastle’s Calbi Ausmann was the state runner up last year as a sophomore. She finished 6th at Glenrock last week.
For the 3A boys, Cody’s Devyn Brotherton is back to defend his title. The Bronc Senior finished third at Conference in Cody last weekend in a very tight race with Star Valley’s Cody Peck and teammate Brody Smith who won the race. The East challenger should be champion Matt Scarlett of Buffalo. Those four boys were all in the top four of last year’s state race.
In 2A, Wilson Clifford of Wyoming Indian is back to defend the title. He and two other Chiefs would cross the finish line within :13 seconds of each other. Clifford won the Five Rivers Race last week. AJ Dickson and Jacob Newman of Lovell will push Clifford as well as Harley Rhodes of Thermopolis. Jace Walker of Hulett/Sundance won the Power River Conference race and could be the best challenge for Clifford from the East side.
2A girls runner up from last year Austin Asay is back. The Pine Bluffs/Burns senior finished third at conference, but, remember they compete in the 3A conference race. She along with West champion Freshman Charlene Bell of Wyoming Indian could have a good race. Asay’s toughest competition may come from those she runs with every day in teammates Celeste Jackson and Celeste Morales.
Laramie won last year’s 4A boys title and looks poised to repeat. Rock Springs was 2nd and will hope to contend. Gillette won the girl’s championship and also look like they could repeat.
Star Valley swept the 3A titles a year ago. They should be in the mix with Cody and Jackson on the girls side while the boy’s race could also come down to Cody and Star Valley.
2A has been all about Wyoming Indian and Pine Bluffs/Burns. The WIHS boys have won 6 straight 2A Championships and nine of the last ten. The PB/B girls have won three consecutive titles. Both are favorites to add another big trophy to the case this year.
