(Riverton, Wyo.) – The Class 4-A State Champion Riverton High School Golf Team was recognized by the Riverton School Board Tuesday night. Coach Lars Flanagan introduced Alec Richardson, Jayd Dion and Chris Quayle to the board, and noted that individual medalist Easton Paxton had a conflict and could not attend.
“We had a really good year and won 5 of the 6 tournaments we played, which is pretty good,” Flanagan said. “We came in to state as the underdog because we were one man short, we only had four golfers, so we didn’t have a throw away score. And of our four players, not one had ever been to a state tournament. And we were successful by one stroke. Each one did exceptional job.”
Lars Flanagan said it was the first ever state golf championship for Riverton, and the school’s first in the Class 4-A upper division for the golf program.
Flanagan had special praise for Paxton, “for what he shot on the first day, a 73, with such miserable weather. The next closest score was a 77 by the defending state champion. It was a phenomenal round and we iced it the second day, if you can call a one stroke win icing it,” he laughed.
At the conclusion of the presentation, golfer Alec Richardson handed over the State Championship trophy to Superintendent Terry Snyder for display in the school. The boys then were treated to a standing ovation for the their accomplishment.
