(Lander, Wyo.) – Fremont County School District 1 Superintendent Mike Bowman tomorrow will present the Board of Education with what he calls a “major rewrite” of the policy governing community use of school facilities.
A couple months ago the district told a local Tae Kwon Do group that it could no long use school facilities. This was because district policy does not allow for-profit groups to use school property. Last month, the board allowed the TKD group to continue for a couple more months.
In a memo to the board, Bowman recommends a number of changes to the existing policy. These include restricting community use to only certain types of rooms; of for-profit groups, only those providing cultural, educational or recreational experiences to school-age youth will be allowed; and for-profit groups will only be allowed use if there are no other suitable facilities available in the community.
The policy changes are up for a first reading. Two readings at two separate meetings are required before any changes go into effect. Bowman said in his memo that a fee schedule would be developed after the changes are approved.
Tuesday night’s regular meeting will be held at 6 p.m. in the district’s Central Office. See the complete agenda below.
