(Lander, Wyo.) – Investigation is ongoing into the Saturday shooting death of 25-year-old Courtney Cox, and Lander Police Chief Jim Carey said the shooting is believed to be an accident.
Carey said police and EMS were called to the 800 block of Vance Drive for a report of a woman who had reportedly been shot in the abdomen. While en route, police were made aware that the woman was no longer conscious. Upon arrival, officers initiated CPR and eventually the woman, Cox, was taken to Lander Regional Hospital where she was later pronounced dead.
“We do believe this to be an accident, moreover a tragedy,” Carey said. He added that the woman’s 30-year-old husband is believed to have been handling the .45-caliber handgun when it fired.
Fremont County Coroner Ed McAuslan said “at this point the investigation does not indicated a self-inflicted wound.” He said preliminary autopsy findings on Sunday “were consistent with a gunshot wound.” He said final determination of the case would be determined when a complete autopsy report is received.
Carey said the investigation is ongoing. Other agencies involved were the Coroner, Fremont County Sheriff’s Office, EMS and the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation.
When asked if alcohol was a factor in the incident, Carey had no comment.
The Fremont County Attorney’s Office has also been involved, and at this point no charges have been filed.
Testing of evidence was expected to continue Monday.
