(Lander, Wyo.) – The Fremont County Sheriffs Office coordinated a rescue operation near Helen Glacier in the Wind River Mountains on Friday, Undersheriff Ryan Lee said. Two men ages 19 and 22 were reported to have leg injuries; they were with a large group of around 12.
“While the weather was clear near the injured men, the conditions elsewhere prohibited the launching of aircraft to the area until mid morning Friday around 11:30 a.m.,” Lee said. “An air ambulance out of Idaho was able to launch and maneuver to the area from the west; they evacuated one of the men. Further attempts to reach the second man on Friday afternoon were unsuccessful due to weather conditions.”
The second man was evacuated about 24 hours later by another Idaho Air Ambulance. “Weather would not allow aircraft in Riverton, Rock Springs, or Jackson to assist with this incident; they were unable to reach the location from their respective starting points due to the weather,” Lee noted.
The Sheriff’s Office did not release how the two men came to be injured.
