(Dubois, Wyo.) – At 6:33 p.m. on Wednesday, Fremont County Sheriff’s Deputies and Wyoming Game & Fish officials were called to Bald Mountain Road in Dubois for a report of an adult grizzly bear in the caller’s barn.
Large Carnivore Biologist Brian DeBolt confirmed that following yesterday evening’s report, officials caught the male grizzly using tranquilizer darts. The bear is 3 or 4 years old.
DeBolt said the barn the bear visited was mostly vacant, and it didn’t cause any damage. However, the bear did appear comfortable maneuvering around buildings and with people around. The bear was known to have been frequenting the area along the Wind River in recent days.
The future of the bear was unknown as of earlier Thursday afternoon. Because of the bear’s seeming familiarity with humans, DeBolt said officials are trying to learn the bear’s history to see how habituated it might be. If the bear has been determined to be too habituated, it could be euthanized. Otherwise the bear will be released in a different location.
