(Updated at 3 p.m.: Undersheriff Ryan Lee said both calls were actually the same incident. The injured North Carolina man reportedly suffered leg injuries following an approximately 15-foot fall. He was extracted by helicopter by about noon and treated at Lander Regional Hospital.)
(Lander, Wyo.) – The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office is sending a Search and Rescue Team to the area of Lonesome Lake near Cirque of the Towers for a report of a man with a broken leg.
“Two of the victim’s climbing companions hiked out of the area and made it to the trailhead in Sublette County yesterday evening to report the incident,” Undersheriff Ryan Lee said. “The victim’s location is within Fremont County; however, Sublette County will be assisting our operation with the use of their helicopter.”
The Cirque of the Towers is approximately 23 miles directly west of Lander in the Wind River Mountain Range. Sublette County’s helicopter is expected to arrive in Lander this morning to take Fremont County personnel into the area to evacuate the man.
Lee said a second report for the area of the Cirque came in on Thursday afternoon. An email was reportedly sent to the Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Office. The email indicated someone communicated to them via Satellite phone that they were lost in the area. Lee said the reporting person said they could only communicate via email.
“We are in the process of following up on this report,” Lee said. “We don’t have much to go on and have not launched any type of mission as of this morning.”
