Police Blotter: Arrests; Man tried to lure child to vehicle; Cat purposely run over

(Lander, Wyo.) – Today’s law enforcement roundup from across Fremont County.

Riverton Police Department

The RPD completed interviews for an open sergeant’s position this past week and Captain Eric Murphy reported that School Resource Officer Todd Baxter received the promotion. His elevation to the supervisory role will move officer Sergio Cabada into the role of the Elementary School SRO.

Murphy also reported that Detective Jason Cox is moving into a new position created within the RPD, that of a Juvenile/Detective officer. It is a lateral move. Cox will be partnered with a Department of Family Services case worker to work on child issues, especially where the parents of children are taken into custody. Cox will also back up the SRO’s at school events and activities.

The Riverton Volunteer Fire Department responded early today for a  smoldering heat tape inside a down spout at the First Interstate Bank’s drive-up facility in Riverton. The heat tape shorted out and the minor fire was quickly put out with a fire extinguisher. Firefighters using heat detecting sensors scanned the building to see if there were any other “hot spots” but did not find any. The emergency vehicles left the scene just before 7 a.m.

The FCSO responded to 35 calls for service on Tuesday.

Undersheriff Ryan Lee said this morning at a man approached a 12-year-old girl playing near the intersection of Y and Dalley Road Tuesday evening and attempted to lure her into his vehicle. “The stated she ran home and notified her parents,” Lee said in a statement released to the media. The young girl identified the suspect as a white man wearing a black hoodie, about six feet tall with no facial hair who was around 2o to 30 years old. “All county law enforcement agencies were made aware of the incident,” Lee said in the statement. “As of this morning, authorities have not made contact with the suspect and the case is under investigation.

An air ambulance was dispatched at 7:44 a.m. Tuesday to the Floyd Wilson Meadows near Dubois for an individual suffering from heart problems.

A resident in the 2500 block of East Monroe called the Sheriff’s Office Tuesday morning at 9:46 a.m. to report a man with a gun outside of her residence. Responding deputies were unable to locate anyone in the vicinity.

Deputies are investigating a burglary in the Lander area that was reported at 10:05 a.m. No other information was available.

A report of drug activity in the Pavillion area was called in anonymously at 11:30 Tuesday. The report is under investigation.

A vehicle that was reported stolen in the St. Stephens area was reportedly recovered in the state of Nebraska.

Deputies were notified of damage to some gates on his property in the Lakeview Subdivision near Kinnear. The reporting party said it appeared someone had driven through the gates.

The Wyoming Highway Patrol was called to investigate a two vehicle crash at the intersection of U.S. Highways26 and Wyoming 133 west of Kinnear Monday at 5:21 p.m. The female drive of a gold passenger car complained of right shoulder and back pain. The driver of a white commercial pick-up truck was not injured. The Morton-Kinnear Fire Battalion and EMS responded to the scene.

A property damage crash involving a black Jeep Wrangler and a deer was reported at 8:44 p.m. Monday n ight at the intersection of Echo and Baldwin Creek roads outside of Lander.

Thomas Knott, 18, Lander, Fremont County Warrant.

Calls:

On Wednesday morning Lander Police and Volunteer Firefighters were called to East Lane for a report of a 9-year-old boy stuck in a tree. Lander Police Sgt. Ron Wells said the boy became stuck after he attempted to get a kitten out of the tree. Firefighters used a ladder to get the boy down. Wells said the kitten was out of the tree before anyone else.

Police were called twice yesterday about fraudulent phone calls alleging that the victim’s grandchild was imprisoned in Guatemala and they need to send more than $2,500 in cash. Neither person who received the call sent money.

At 2:28 p.m. on Tuesday, police were called to South Fifth Street for a report of a truck that purposely ran over a cat. Wells said an 11-year-old and 5-year-old were calling their pet across the street and mid-sized grey truck with a matching camper shell apparently left its lane of travel and ran over the cat. Police have been unable to locate the suspect vehicle, which was believed to have been occupied by a couple teenagers.

At 11:37 p.m., police were called to the 600 block of Wood Street for the scent of marijuana in the area. Police located a man with a small fire in his backyard, but there was no evidence of marijuana usage.
