(Riverton, Wyo.) – Riverton Mayor Ron Warpness received a surprise at a recent auction he attended. As the auctioneer was about to begin he said there was a special presentation that would kick off the event. “Then he called me up front,” Warpness said. “I didn’t have any idea why, then he produced this chicken and presented it to me. It was right after the City Council approved chickens in the city limits.”

With the auction audience enjoying a good laugh, Warpness graciously accepted the chicken, and he said he immediately knew who in city government was going to get the chicken prize.

“I thought this would be perfect for City Administrator Steven Weaver because of his hard work and research on the chicken ordinance,” Warpness said.

Weaver has placed the chicken in his office as a memento of the discussions. “The mayor said he may show me how to change the batteries or how to turn it off if it gets too loud in here,” he laughed. When there is a loud noise, like a hand clap or a loud conversation, the chicken begins to cluck.

Earlier, Weaver was presented with a chicken tee shirt and a chicken tie, items he wore the night the ordinance gained final approval. City Public Works Director Bill Urbigkit also donned a “fowl” bonnet that night, but later admitted it was not a chicken, but a Univ. of Kansas Jayhawk hat.
