(Riverton, Wyo.) – The Fremont County Coroner’s Office and the Riverton Police Department are investigating the death of an infant that was reported Sunday morning.

The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office call log shows a report coming in at 10:38 a.m. on Sunday at a Riverton address. Fremont County Coroner Ed McAuslan said the deceased is a 18-month-old boy. The call on the log was labeled “breathing.” Elsewhere in the report at the same time, an ambulance assist call was listed for Spruce Street in Riverton. All other information was redacted. McAuslan confirmed the location of the call was a residence.

In a news release, Riverton Police Capt. Eric Murphy said, “Riverton Police Officers arrived and observed that the baby was not breathing and performed CPR for approximately 20 minutes until EMS arrived. The Riverton Police Detective Division was notified and is currently conducting interviews.”

Murphy in a follow-up interview could not comment on whether the death was suspicious.

“Any time a 1- to 3-month-old dies, it’s suspicious,” he said. “That’s just how we treat it. … It’s just not normal.”

The body was scheduled for an autopsy in Loveland, Colo., on Monday afternoon. McAuslan did not release the infant’s name or a suspected cause of death.

“We have a detective who is down at the autopsy right now,” Murphy said.
