(Fort Washakie, Wyo.) – The 23,473 acre Alpine Lake Fire on the Wind River Reservation was pushed by winds Saturday into heavy timber and the resulting ash fall covered the landscape in both Riverton and Lander.
Due to the dynamic conditions created by the fire, Wind River Forestery Fire Information Officer Karl Brauneis said the scheduled “burn out” planned Saturday was delayed, but did occur later in the day “at specific management action points (MAP’s) to help slow down or take the heat out of the fire as it hit those specific points,” he said. ”In the attached pictures you can see ridge tops and other openings that we are using to help contain the fire.” Brauneis said the openings “were burned off by a hand crew and by helicopter before the fire reached those MAP’s.” He said the helicopter is outfitted with a Plastic Sphere Dispenser (PSD) machine “that basically fires ping pong balls filled with Ethelyn glycol.”
Saturday’s fire burned mainly in the Sage Creek Basin area and is still within the Fire Planning Area.
