(Riverton, Wyo.) — A local military veteran with an interest in history has embarked on an ambitious project to post photos and service histories of Fremont County, Wyoming, veterans. He’s created a web site for the project and explains that the work is a community project that is completely non-commercial.
Retired USAF Master Sergeant Harry Meekins of Riverton explained:
Meekins said he was on a remote assignment deep within Iran when he took up military history as a hobby, “and it has stuck with me ever since.”
Meekins said that even though some of his focus has changed over the years, “I am deeply committed to the photo project. It might be also labeled ‘military genealogy’. The goal is to showcase to the world our veterans from all ime periods, branches, and ranks,” he said.
For the web site, Meekins said he uploads a photo of a veteran in uniform with a bit of history about their service. “I do not, under any circumstances, give out any personal information such as address, location, or current status. So far I have archived biographies from World War I through the Iraq war,” he said. “I have often said that if someone has an ancestor who served in the frontier wars and was from Fremont County (and they had a picture in uniform) that I would
include them. My aim is to create a broad, wholecloth portrait of our veterans and to emphasize the fact that the uniform, the flag of our nation and our youth weave us all together — regardless of when the service occurred.”

“Every picture and bio tells a story and believe me, we have some heroes in our midst,” he said.
