Lander Volunteer Fire Department
Fire Department Administrator Nick Hudson reported additional details on a fire alarm at the new Lander Middle School last Thursday. Hudson said school officials were preparing for an evening basketball game when the alarm system went off. There was no fire, he reported. At the new building, traditional smoke alarms were replaced with a new technology that detects airborne particles via sensors. “It was either some dust that became airborne on the basketball standards that were raised for the first time, or a basketball hit one of the fabric air handling ducts and raised some dust that triggered the new system,” Hudson said. Efforts to recreate the alarm were unsuccessful. “We’re not sure what triggered it, but there was no fire nor any smoke.”
